The Work of the Fund

  • BEF identifies scholarship recipients based on need, targeting students whose parents are subsistence farmers.
  • BEF pays directly for students' educational needs. Expenses include tuition and fees, books, and uniforms. High school students are also supported with housing, since they must leave their rural town in order to go to high school.
  • BEF has three full time elementary school teachers on staff.
  • BEF provides mentoring and follow-up support to students as needed. Tuition for private or specialty schools is also available on a case-by-case basis.

Future plans include:

  • Increased number of girls in the program

  • Girls health education, family planning
  • Support for higher education
  • Community building activities
  • Building a small elementary school facility in the town of Natitingou.

What the kids are saying:

“Les cours se déroulent assez bien à l’école. On se débrouille de tout côté. Je lutte énormement pour obtenir la première place, juste pour vous faire honneur. C’est tout ce que je peux faire de plaisir.”

Translation: "Classes are going pretty well in school. I am managing to succeed in all of them. I am fighting enormously to be in the top of my class, just so you can be proud. That's all I can do to show my appreciation for your help."

“Je suis optimiste et persuadée que c’est seulement par l’école (la culture) que je deviendrai une femme émacipée car c’est certainement ce que visent certains parents dont vous, en s’investissant pour mes études.”

Translation: "I am optimistic and convinced that it is only through school (culture) that I will become an emancipated woman, because it's certainly what some people like yourself hope by investing so much in my education."
